Diving 101

IMG_8717.JPG

Through this body of work project, I wanted to capture the technical aspect of diving.

Over the course of multiple days, I took pictures at my diving practices. At first, my goal was to simply capture beautiful images of dives. However, I soon realized that these images did not truly represent the hard work and attention to detail that goes into executing a dive.

In order to communicate this idea, I flagged groups of photos, that I call sequences because they show a specific dive at multiple points in time. I then used photoshop to create composites of the sequences. The background of each photo is black and white, leaving only the diver, diving board, and pool in color, in order to bring more focus to those aspects of the photo. I wanted to emphasize the bright colors of each bathing suit, as well as the blue/turquoise colors of the diving board and water.

To further demonstrate the technical aspects of diving, I titled each photo with the official name of the dive that is shown. The first letter of each name represents the direction of the dive:

1 is forward

2 is back

3 is reverse (forwards to backwards)

4 is inward (backwards to forwards)

5 is any kind of twisting.

The rest of the numbers represent how many flips are included in the dive. The letter is the position -

A is straight

B is pike

C is tuck

D is free (any position that is not classified).

I named the body of work as a whole, Diving 101 because 101 is the easiest dive a person can do, a front dive, and it only gets harder from there.
